How to make flashcards with images
Step-by-step: add pictures to digital flashcards from image search or your own uploads, when images help, and how to study them. For college students.
Clevaly · October 18, 2026 · 5 min readIn Clevaly choose Manual editor on the Create hub, add a term and definition, then add an image from the built-in image search or upload your own. The image shows on the card when you study, and editing and studying are free on every plan.
When images help
Use a picture when identifying or explaining a visual is part of what you need to learn. A diagram of a joint, a map, a graph or a laboratory setup can give a question useful context. Pair the image with a specific prompt rather than asking yourself to remember an entire page.
- Anatomy: ask which structure a label points to, and put the name and explanation in the definition.
- Geography: pair a map with one question about a place or pattern.
- Statistics: use a graph and ask what its axes or trend mean.
- Lab work: show a setup and ask what one part does.
Make an image flashcard in Clevaly
- Open the Create hub and choose Manual editor under More.
- Add a term or question and its definition or answer. Keep the question focused on one thing you want to recall.
- Add an image using the built-in image search, or upload your own picture. Choose a picture where the relevant detail is clear.
- Review the term, definition and image together. Check the wording against your course material.
- Open Flashcards to study. Look at the picture, answer the question from memory, then reveal the definition and check your answer.
Get images from slides or image search
A screenshot of a course slide can preserve the diagram your lecturer used. Crop around the relevant detail before uploading it, keeping any labels needed to understand the question. The built-in image search is another way to find a visual for a term. Check that it depicts the right concept, and use images you have permission to use.
Avoid choosing an image simply because it looks familiar. If the answer is written across the picture, it may turn recall into reading. Write a question that asks you to explain a relationship or identify a specific part.
Start faster with AI
To generate the terms rather than type them, use image to flashcards. Upload the screenshot or photo as the source, choose Flashcards, then review and edit the output. For the original lecture deck, use PowerPoint to flashcards. Generation from an image and attaching a picture to a card are separate steps: add the card picture in the editor when you need it.
Tips for studying image cards
- Use one question per card so you know what a correct answer should include.
- Keep enough visual context to understand the question without adding unrelated detail.
- Explain your answer before revealing the definition, rather than only recognizing the picture.
- Check diagrams and AI-generated terms against the original material, especially labels and similar-looking structures.
- Edit cards whose question is unclear. A short prompt and a precise answer are easier to check.
What about image occlusion?
Image occlusion hides parts of an image so you can recall what is covered. Clevaly does not support it today. As a workaround, make one card per label: name the label in the question and put its answer in the definition. You can prepare a copy of the picture with that label covered before uploading it; Clevaly does not create the cover for you.
For a tool that documents this workflow, the Anki manual documents Image Occlusion.
